These days, there are a lot of options out there for seniors who need a little assistance in life. Nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and hospice outlets all provide some measure of help and security for the elderly.

Not everyone can afford such services — or to leave their home. To help this segment of the population, an abundance of home-care organizations have cropped up in Central Jersey. One of the newest is Caring Rose Home Care in Annandale, founded by Alan Revell of Milford.

Revel has a history in the business, having worked as a supervisor in a local nursing home. But he did that for just one day.

"I just knew that there had to be a better way to treat our elderly loved ones," said Revell, who launched Caring Rose Home Care in November. "What I saw in just one day was enough to change my life. There are many respectable nursing homes, but I knew right then that we needed to find a better way to care for our parents and grandparents when they can no longer take care of themselves."

Caring Rose is doing that. But what makes the place different, Revell said, is that its short- or long-term nonmedical services for those faced with health or mobility changes are available for people of all ages — not just seniors, even though they are the priority.

"First and foremost, our mission is to help seniors and anyone requiring care to live independently," said Revell, who makes Caring Rose's services available 24 hours a day. "Home care requires a time commitment from a caregiver whether the person is family or a professional, and it's not always possible to for families to find enough time in the day with all the other responsibilities that demand our attention these days. You can't be in two places at one time, but the needs don't go away."

Revell's caregivers go through an extensive screening process featuring evaluations and background checks.

"Obviously, allowing an unknown individual into your home is a major decision," he said. "I will only employ home health aides and caregivers that I would trust caring for my own family."

Caring Rose features a host of in-home services, ranging in length from just one hour to around the clock, and they are available to residents of Central Jersey and beyond. They include housekeeping, cooking and food preparation, transportation, companionship, personal organization, correspondence, bill paying, nursing home visits and family mediation.

Right now, most of Revell's clients live in Hunterdon County, but as word spreads, he hopes to make inroads across the rest of New Jersey and possibly even venture into other states.

"I can get no greater reward in life than seeing an elderly person living happily in their own home because of the outstanding and compassionate service we can provide," said Revell, who also has worked for Somerset Medical Center. "Our goal is to become a trusted national brand that offers the highest-quality, nonmedical in-home care at an affordable price."
