Unity Bank Supports Elumis Foundation’s Effort to Bring Electricity to Impoverished Families in Africa
CLINTON, N.J. (August 20, 2020) – Unity Bank has donated $2,500 to the Elumis Foundation to help support the organization’s mission of providing families in impoverished areas of the world with solar kits. The foundation was founded by Franklin Lakes teenagers Eva and Michael Sakellakis who were inspired by their father’s solar energy business.
“The Elumis Foundation thanks Unity Bank for their generous donation, which will provide 25 families in Africa with electricity,” said Eva Sakellakis, 17, a senior at Indian Hills High School in Oakland. “The foundation will be making a large donation in Africa by the end of the year, which will be supported by Unity Bank.”
Michael Sakellakis, 15, a sophomore at Bergen County Academies, and Eva were motivated to help families in underdeveloped and impoverished countries after realizing the living conditions they must endure. The foundation provides solar kits, powered through solar panels, that can provide light and electricity for a family for up to 24 continuous hours.
“It is a privilege to be able to support the Elumis Foundation’s efforts to provide electricity to families in need worldwide,” said Unity Bank President & CEO James A. Hughes. “As a community bank, we are committed to supporting organizations working to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate not just around the corner, but also around the world.”
The Elumis Foundation previously donated solar kits to 1,600 families in Vietnam and Ghana. The foundation has also committed through the Ghana International Women’s Club to provide a solar powered computer lab to a school in Ghana. Future plans include providing solar powered water irrigation systems to family farms in Africa.
